25 Best Prayers and Reflections for Lent – 2024

What is the significance of Lent? I had no clue for the first two decades of my life. All I had heard was that some people would “give something up” (like chocolate) but I didn’t know why.

Lent is a 40-day spiritual preparation to celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection on Easter.

Lent serves as a time to meditate on the suffering that Christ endured on our behalf. It also provides an opportunity to reflect upon our own Baptism and what it means to live as a child of God.

The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Maundy Thursday (also called Holy Thursday, one day before Good Friday). 

Lent in the Church

As in the early Church up to today, there are observances in the United States and around the world when we remember Jesus’ birth, baptism, death, resurrection, and ascension. Why? Because we would not have the hope of eternal life without Jesus.

Each of those Church observances includes a time set aside to prepare for the major events of Jesus’ life, ministry, and the kingdom of God.

Church worship gatherings reflect a more penitential tone during Lent. On the liturgical calendar, purple is the traditional color during Lent since it is often associated with penitence. Some churches offer mid-week penance services or an evening prayer time.

The word “alleluia” is usually omitted from the Church’s liturgy. Alleluia is a joy-filled phrase meaning “Praise the Lord.” Easter ushers in the alleluias which sets Lent distinctly apart from the rest of the year.

The Church’s décor usually reflects a more somber tone, as well, which creates a powerful contrast with the jubilant celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.

Lent Daily Practices

Lent includes a more reflective and penitential time. It offers time for a good examination of conscience with open hearts to see whether our lives truly reflect Jesus’ love that honors His sacrifice. 

Personally, each day during Lent includes a time of silence, a good and honest confession time, and saying the Lord’s prayer. 

I spend time re-reading the four Gospels to keep Jesus’ teachings fresh about how He interacted with people. He spent much time with His Father in prayer. I also offer prayers of praise that our true home in heaven has been secured by Jesus.

Throughout the day I pause for times of silent prayer to reflect on the mercy of God, Jesus’ perfect ways, and how I can show His love to others.

Interestingly, I find myself listening more closely to those around me and what is going on in their lives. Even though Lent represents a short time in the year it is spiritually very powerful.

Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday sets the spiritual stage to walk through the next forty days of Lent. 

There is no requirement to give up anything for Lent (like chocolate, shopping, etc.). However, if you do, the idea is that everything you think about the thing you gave up you pray instead. 

These prompts are designed to set your mind on Christ, including words of assurance and time of confession.

1. God’s Grace

Prompt: In the season of Lent I prepare to receive the Easter gift of resurrection. I am invited to walk a path of introspection and reflection acknowledging such things as the shadows and light in my life. Trusting in the grace of God, I admit my own sin.

Prayer: Holy God, You know me better than I know myself. You see me clearer than anyone. How impossible it seems that I could even try to hide anything from You! But I do. Sometimes I pretend to be better than I am. I do things I know will hurt others and act as though I am blameless. But I am not. I am complicit, and I am guilty, and I am broken. I ask for Your forgiveness because You love me more than I can imagine. You alone make me whole. This I ask in the name of Jesus, who came to show me the way. Amen.

2. Drawing Close

Prompt: I know that You are as close as my next breath. Yet sometimes it feels as if there is a great distance between us. Yet You did not move. I did. So I offer this prayer of confession.

Prayer: Dearest Jesus, when I feel abandoned the distance feels devastating. That distance acts as a force of evil when something conspires against me. That distance is sometimes my foolish choices or my selfish acts. I seek Your forgiveness. Assure me of Your closeness, Your power, and Your mercy. You live inside of me through the power of the Holy Spirit. Remind me of Your closeness today. In Your great mercy I pray, Amen.

3. Fellowship with God

Prompt: In the beauty of this sacred moment and the fellowship I have with the God of creation, I speak with Him about my life. I confess how I have not followed Him wholeheartedly and how I have faltered. Trusting in God’s grace and mercy, I pray this confession.

Prayer: Merciful God, You sent Jesus to take away the sin of the world. Because of Jesus’ blood shed for me, my sin does not separate us. I do things that hurt other people, the creation, mankind, and You. Reign fully over my life, Lord God. Give me strength and courage to be less hurtful and more loving. These things I pray in the name of Jesus, who set the perfect example. Amen.

4. Thankful Heart

Prompt: In a world that is always looking for more, remind me to be grateful for what God has already provided. With a thankful heart, I pray.

Prayer: Merciful and loving God: when I am ungrateful, remind me of Your grace. If I am oblivious, open my eyes. When I am harsh, gentle my spirit. If I am apathetic, show me Your suffering children. Should I demean myself, whisper that I am created in Your image. When I lose all hope, show me the empty tomb. Renew a right spirit within me. Shape me and turn me around, so that I will live with blessing and grace and light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

5. Remove Distraction

Prompt: There are so many things that lobby for my attention. Remind me not to get distracted from the purposes God has for my life.

Prayer: God of mercy and love, I know that sometimes I allow myself to be distracted by things that don’t matter all that much. I would rather pursue intellectual arguments than live the Gospel. It seems that I would rather debate my equals than defend the vulnerable. I prefer to think about You instead of getting to know You. Help me, O Christ, to discern what matters to You and to the vulnerable You call me to help. Help me to open up my heart, wide in love and grace, and so be a living example of your Good News. In Christ, I pray. Amen.

6. Guard My Words

Prompt: I come before God in silence and in prayer, to open my heart to my Creator, the One who heals, loves, and forgives.

Prayer: Merciful God, hear my prayer. When I am weary, I do not offer kindness as often as I might. I admit that I do not add beauty to the world apart from You. I pay lip service to the cries of others and sit idly by until the sound fades. Sometimes I get it right, and sometimes I don’t. I ask for Your mercy and grace. I ask for Your help to give me the courage and strength to live as You would have me live. In the name of Jesus Christ, who gave me those qualities and who taught me all I need to know, I pray. Amen.

7. Keep Me From Sin

Prompt: Maybe it’s easier to understand sin as separation: separation from God, separation from others, separation from my identity in Christ. In the midst of separation, God walks toward me, inviting me to walk toward Him. In prayer, let me seek God’s grace.

Prayer: Holy God, sometimes I wander off. I get distracted by shiny things and get lost. Merciful God, You come to find me. Lost and afraid, I become stubborn and intractable. Loving God, You pick me up and brush me off and set my feet on Your right path again. You are the light of the world, so give me eyes past this present darkness. I will wander again, but for the moment, I am safe and forgiven. Keep my feet on Your path to make a difference in this world in Your name. Thank you in Jesus’ name, Amen.

8. Let Me See Those in Need

Prompt: Life is full of good things and full of hard things. I work to cope with the easy and with the sad. Sometimes I try to manage life all by myself apart from God’s guidance. I ignore the pain of someone else and the struggle of another. God calls me to see it all, and to help when I can. Aware of my shortcomings and confident in God’s grace, let me make my confession.

Prayer: Holy God, I am an imperfect person and I need Your love. Forgive me when I ignore Your children who cry out in distress. Lord, forgive me when I choose not to see those who remind me too much of myself. Forgive me when I put rules ahead of people, choose legality over kindness, and judgment that lacks mercy. Enable me to see as You see, the wide vistas open to the possibility of compassion and grace. O God, hear my prayer. Amen.

9. God Knows Me

Prompt: No one knows me better than God. No one loves me more than God. Lord, hear my prayer.

Prayer: Almighty God, You know me. You know my heart, You know my thoughts, You know my actions and human nature. You know my successes and my failures, that which commends me and that which condemns me. I know the good I have done, and how I have fallen short. Draw me close so that the burden of sin would not weigh me down. I pray that I would know you better so that the freedom of your mercy would enable me to fly. Forgive my sins, and restore me to wholeness, I pray. Amen.

10. Trusting God

Prompt: Sometimes I question what God is doing and question whether or not He knows best. Trusting God in all things, I pray this confession.

Prayer: Holy God, hear my prayer. As I walk this spiritual life, I relentlessly question You. You heal someone’s beloved, and I ask, “Why not this one too?” You shower food upon some who hunger, and I complain that my stomach is growling. Forgive me. Forgive me for my doubts and my limited sight. You are the God of justice with the final word. You see the whole thing, not only pieces like me. Open wide before me the expanse of Your grace. Let me feel and share the embrace of Your love. I am in awe of Your healing power. Through Christ, I pray. Amen.

11. The Love of God

Prompt: Even with seven billion people on this planet, God still knows me individually. He does not see me as part of a human blur. He sees my face. With a thankful heart, I pray this confession.

Prayer (based on Psalm 8): Great God of all creation, who am I that you are mindful of me? You set the stars in motion. And You set tides that launch waves crashing against the shore. You know the heights and depths of the world. Why do you bother with me? You count the hairs on my head and call me by name. You give me Your wisdom and You uphold me by Your Spirit. Faithfully, You take perfect care of me. I cannot grasp Your love for me, O God. In your mercy, forgive my shortsightedness and let me lean into the person You created me to be. I pray in the peace of Christ. Amen.

12. Brokenness

Prompt: There is so much brokenness in this world, including my own. I have been hurt and I have hurt others. In hope, I pray this confession.

Prayer: Holy God, hear my prayer. There is pain and there is sorrow, there are broken relationships and broken hearts. Sometimes I am the cause of those things. I have caused pain. I have broken the relationship. Sometimes I am simply a part of them – I am the one who suffers, I am the one who is broken. So I ask for Your forgiveness. I ask for Your healing. Turn me from my former self to a person who reflects Your mercy and grace. I pray in Christ’s name who is my example, Amen.

13. Remember My Purpose

Prompt: My purpose in this life is to shine the light of Jesus into a dark and hurting world. I realize that sometimes I don’t do that very well, so let me make my confession.

Prayer: O God, when I look at You in Your Word and then look at myself, I realize how tiny I am. But I am not so small that my actions are inconsequential. Sometimes a word of thanks brings warmth to a cold heart. A choice to forgive opens up a new future for two people. Sometimes a thoughtless gesture slashes the heart. Sometimes my inaction leaves the world in its sorry state. I ask for your help. I pray that I will not be captive to the wrong I do but changed by the mercy You grant. Amen.

14. Unburden Me

Prompt: I carry around so many unnecessary burdens each day. Releasing them to God frees me emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. To release my burden to the Lord, I pray this confession.

Prayer: Holy God, I carry the burdens of words spoken that I wish I had not. Acts done in anger or pride that I wish I could undo. I hold grudges for a long time, and I do not actively try to reconcile with those from whom I am estranged. Forgive me. Forgive my words and deeds and inactions that cause You and others sorrow. Restore me, renew me, and give me the strength. I pray for the courage and love to be an effective witness to You. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

15. Surrendering to God

Prompt: Despite my sorrows and sins I am given light and beauty that comes from God. Trusting in Your unfailing love, let me make my confession during Lent.

Prayer: God of love and mystery, make me whole. Heal the wounds I carry. Let Your love heal the wounds I have created in others. Make me strong in the broken places so that I speak from experience when I tell others that Your mercy and hope are real. Forgive me and enable me to forgive without hesitation. God of love and mystery, make me whole. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

16. A Holy Offering

Prompt: I have come to God with a full heart. A heart that carries sorrow, worry, and guilt. In this sacred time I offer my heart to God, remembering Christ’s invitation that all who are weary and carrying heavy burdens may come to Him. Trusting in that love, let me make my confession.

Prayer: Holy God, I offer You my life. That the good I have done will build up Your children, and not my ego. I pray that the harm I have caused will lead me to confession and atonement. That the anxiety that eats at me will be transformed into trust. That the hope You give will multiply and leaven the world like yeast. Righteous God, hear me, forgive me, reshape me, and love me, I pray. Amen.

17. Look to the Light

Prompt: The troubles in the world around me and in my own life lead me to dark places. Unrest and division in the world trouble me greatly. I want to live in the light of Christ, so I make this confession.

Prayer: Holy God, I admit to You that all is not right. In my heart and in this world, there is much darkness. Father, let Your light shine into the darkness of sinful eyes. Let me see what You have mended rather than what is broken. I long to praise rather than criticize. Let my focus rest on You and not self-interests during this season of Lent. Turn my eyes onto You. Let me experience and share Your grace, healing, and love. This I pray in the strong name of Jesus. Amen.

18. I Am Loved

Prompt: I can be so hard on myself. Some days I feel very unlovable. But that does not line up with who You say that I am, so I pray this confession during Lent.

Prayer: Holy God, remind me that I am loved when I find myself unlovable. Remind me that there is hope when all I see around me causes despair. You sent the Prince of Peace when war and violence threaten. Remind me that You are the merciful judge when injustice seems to prevail. You give me all I need to do Your work in the world. Remind me that with the help of Your grace, I can be graceful to others. I confess my doubt. Give me the strong faith to trust in Your love. Amen.

19. A Call to Mercy

Prompt: The call to confession is always a call to experience God’s mercy. In admitting the truth to my loving Creator, I open myself to the mercy of God’s grace and healing. Trusting in that divine love, let me pray.

Prayer: Gracious God,  when I hear bad news reports around the world it feels as if I am in the middle of a bad dream. There is so much heartache and brokenness in this world. Let me not simply turn over and go back to sleep, ignoring the plight of Your children. It is hard to see tragedy and suffering. It is hard to admit my responsibility as part of the heartache. It’s hard to work for the good when the good seems so far off. So help me, dear Lord. Give me the courage to see clearly. Give me the strength to do my part. Grant me the grace to forgive others as You have forgiven me. And give me faith to follow you wholeheartedly. This is my prayer, offered in the name of Christ. Amen.

20. True Faith

Prompt: Faith is more than an intellectual pursuit. Faith is my compass for how I live each day. During this quiet time, I can reflect on how I am living. Does my life reflect Jesus? Mindful of God’s grace and love, let me make my confession.

Prayer: Dear God, have mercy on me for the wrong I have done. Give me the eyes of faith to see people in need. Help me set aside my prejudice and bias. Fill me with a longing to know You better. Forgive me for my lukewarm responses. Kindle in me the passion for Your work. Set me free from doubt and fear. Send me out to shine Your light and love to others. This I pray in the name of Jesus, my leader, my guide, my Savior. Amen.

21. Just Admit It

Prompt: To confess is to admit – to admit something that might make me feel guilty, ashamed, or sad. To confess to God is to await that word of grace, of forgiveness, of hope. Trusting in God’s mercy, let me make my confession.

Prayer: Loving Creator, I admit that I like placing You into neat little boxes.  – the God of this, the God of that, the God of these people but not of those people. I admit I make You too small. I admit I try to make You manageable. Forgive my short-sightedness, my self-limitedness, and my stubbornness. Give me the faith to follow You and Your Word wholeheartedly. Let me embrace the joy of being dearly loved by You. In Christ, I pray, Amen.

22. Lay Down Burdens

Prompt: The call to confess is the call to lay down the burdens I carry. Guilt, judgment, and unkindness are heavy, indeed. I lay my burdens down at the foot of the Cross. Trusting in the mercy and love of God, let me pray.

Prayer: Savior, like a shepherd lead me; much I need Thy tender care. Forgive me for the wrong I know I have done: my neglect of the vulnerable; my misuse of Your gifts; my hoarding of things I am called to share. Forgive me for failing to do good, offering grace to the imperfect; forgiving those who have hurt me; seeing the good that surrounds me. Turn me away from that which harms, and turn me to You, the only One who heals. Amen.

23. Forgive Me

Prompt: There are days when I hurt people that I love. I blame my busy schedule or impatient nature, but I know that I hurt others when my mind is not focused on the Lord. In my confession, hear my prayer.

Prayer: Holy God, I know when I have hurt another. I know when I have acted against Your rule of love. When I have neglected to do something that would help another person or help the world. I know that I sin and come before You in true repentance. I also know that You love me, forgive me, and call me to forgive others. So enable me in all of this to be Your servant in service and mission. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

24. Being Like Christ

Prompt: So often I do not act like Jesus. There are times when I do not respond to others with love and respect. As I open my heart, hear my prayer of confession.

Prayer: Holy and wonderful God, hear my prayer. You alone enable me to be different – less judging, less selfish, less greedy; more hopeful, more graceful, more trusting. I would be different if I opened my heart to Your cleansing. If I opened my hands for You to direct them. If I would relinquish control of my feet to follow You. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, loosen my grip and remake me in Your image. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

25. Confession

Prompt: To confess to God is to do something holy – opening myself to the light and healing of the divine. Trusting in God’s grace and mercy, let me confess.

Prayer: Holy God, forgive me for being prideful. In times when I need you most, I forget how to be humble and how to seek Your help. Forgive me for being so smug and anxious. I admit that I am not in control of my own life. You are. And You know what is best for me. Forgive me and enable me to be who You created me to be. This I pray in Jesus’ strong name, Amen.

My Prayer for You

As you and I eat this daily bread of confession and repentance until Good Friday, I pray that our Heavenly Father breathes new life into your soul with His steadfast love. That He reminds you of the joy of your salvation. 

Our merciful Father gives you a clean heart as you approach the foot of the Cross each day along this Lenten journey.

This season of repentance and mindful silent confession reminds us how great the love of God truly is as He gives us new eyes leading up to Holy Week. 

With a collective humble heart, we utter a unison prayer of confession for the forgiveness of sins. We wait to celebrate the glorious resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Amen.

10 Powerful Prayers for Repentance and Restoration

Some people jeer at the mere mention of offering prayers of repentance. I used to be one of them. We tend to struggle with pride. And prideful people do not like to admit we’re wrong. 

Yet here is the truth as Christ-followers: God’s forgiveness, mercy, and grace are freely extended to everyone who comes to Him with genuine repentance. The Bible calls it a “contrite heart.” God wants to hear our prayers, including that daily hard prayer of repentance.

What is Repentance?

The plain definition of repentance is  “deep sorrow, compunction, or contrition for a past sin, wrongdoing.” So true repentance begins as a posture of our heart. The key ingredient is the power of the Holy Spirit, who convicts you with godly grief.

Nothing hinders your prayers and intimacy with the Lord like unconfessed sin. I keep a journal of things I confess so that I can see how God is changing my heart and life.

Getting Real

It is vital to keep a short account of your secret sins (and public ones) to maintain a right spirit of sincere repentance. As soon as you become aware of a sinful attitude or blatant sin, don’t wait to lay it out before God. 

The longer you hold on to a destructive path of sin, a harsh tongue, or wicked ways, the longer you delay God’s abundant mercy to cleanse you.

His steadfast love means that it is your heavenly Father’s good pleasure to give you a clean heart once again. Making your prayer life a way of life brings endless times of refreshing from God’s grace.

What’s the Point?

Repentance has two primary purposes: (1) to acknowledge your sins, and (2) to invite you into deep examination of your choices and path of righteousness.

In repentance, you seek God’s forgiveness of sins and confess any evil way hidden in your heart. You may come to God with a broken spirit, but you receive His great mercy, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

In his 95 Theses, repentance was the very first item on Martin Luther’s list: “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent’ [Matthew 4:17], he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” In fact, items 2 and 3 of Luther’s 95 Theses were also about repentance. Repentance was so important that it occupied the top three spots on his list. 

The point of repentance is not to constantly remind yourself of how bad you are. Repentance humbles you to acknowledge God alone as sovereign over your life. 

As you confess your sins, the act of repentance reminds you of the incredible goodness of your merciful God as He wipes the slate clean once again. God’s help and great love poured over you through the blood of Jesus are all the help you need.

10 Powerful Prayers of Repentance

Each repentance prayer begins with God’s Word for a biblical foundation. Let’s run into the open arms of our dear Lord.

Prayer #1

1 John 1:19 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, I confess my sinful nature and longing after the things of this world. I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done and by what I have left undone. I have not loved You with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. Guide me, O Lord, along the right path all the days of my life. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Prayer: Lord God, what hope You give me in those words! I long to draw near to you, but my unconfessed sin stands in the way. I confess my sins to you right now and repent with sorrow. Bring a fresh awareness of the seriousness of my sin and how it separates me from You. My sin has caused that distance and I confess it now. I pray that Your mighty name be exalted in my life. Thank you for drawing near to me when I continuously pull away from You.

2 Chronicles 7:14 – “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, each day I am surrounded by the sins of the world – and that includes pride. I have allowed pride to keep me from humbling myself before You. This world does not celebrate humbleness, but You honor it. Father, turn my face toward You. Cleanse me of pride and anything else that keeps me from seeking You. I pray that Your good things continuously show me a better way to live a new life centered on You.

Prayer: O God of my salvation, the “Lord’s prayer” that Christ Jesus taught the disciples demonstrates how You long for us to live free of guilt, sin, and unforgiveness. I confess my sins to you now, Father. Give me the tenacity and strength to mourn over and repent of my sin to continuously turn my heart toward You. Thank you for running after this prodigal son every single time.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I confess that I have put my agenda ahead of Yours. I have trusted my timing instead of Yours. I have trusted my own cleverness rather than leaned into Your holiness. And have not lived in a way that shows the glory of God in my life. Purify my heart, Lord. I ask for Your forgiveness. Set my feet on the right path that leads to the kingdom of heaven and intimacy with You.

2 Peter 3:9 ​- “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

Prayer: Lord God, You could condemn the whole world, including me, at this very moment. Yet You want us to live eternally with You rather than perish in our sin. Father, I repent of my sins whether I know about them or I am blind to them. I find that repentance is painful, but my sorrow is a gift of Your grace that draws me closer to You. Thank you for loving me so much.

Prayer: Dear Lord, what hope this verse brings! You promise that when I repent You faithfully wipe out my sins and refresh me in the Lord. I confess my sins, whether known or unknown, and am heartily sorry for them. I humbly ask for Your forgiveness and desire for You alone to put my feet on the right path each day. Keep the Word of the Lord alive in my heart as I follow You all the days of my life.

10) 2 Corinthians 7:9-10a – “As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret.“

Prayer: Father God, thank you for working in me godly grief that produces true repentance that leads to eternal life. It is easy to follow the wrong path of worldly repentance where I’m only sorry that I got caught. Continue to give me a willing spirit toward good deeds and serving others in Your glorious name. My specific prayer is that you remove every thought or intention of my heart that does not draw me closer to You.

Worldly Sorrow vs. Godly Sorrow

The Apostle Paul talks about godly grief and worldly grief (both known as sorrow). It is important to recognize the difference between these two kinds of repentance to determine whether you are offering genuine repentance – whether to God and another person. 

Worldly Sorrow

Worldly sorrow tends to focus on regret over the consequences of behavior. It says, “I’m sorry I got caught. I’m sorry I have to face the consequences for what I did.” It is sorrow over the consequences you face instead of sorrow over the hurt you have inflicted. 

Worldly sorrow is self-centered; it focuses on the suffering of “poor little me” as you face the consequences of your actions. It says, “Yes, I did that, but now nobody trusts me anymore. Everybody’s talking about me. Everybody’s mad at me.” Me is a key word with worldly sorrow.

“Worldly grief produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10b).

Godly Sorrow 

Godly sorrow says, “I’m sorry for who I’ve become. I’m sorry that I’ve become so deceptive and dishonest. I’m sorry for how my behaviors have hurt you and destroyed our relationship.” Do you see the difference? 

Godly sorrow owns up to the sin and focuses on how to repair the damage, inviting repentance and restitution. That’s why the Bible says godly sorrow leads to salvation and freedom. 

A person who exhibits godly sorrow is determined to walk away from the behavior and move toward repairing the damaged relationship.

I wrote an entire Bible study about forgiveness because it is vital to keep our hearts moldable in God’s hands. Godly sorrow is key.

God’s Mercy

In His great mercy, God did not dismiss your sins as inconsequential. Rather, He added them to the weight of sin His Son bore on the cross for you, and He remembers them no more. 

When you separate God from vengeance and justice, the cross becomes superfluous. And the cross is anything but superfluous.

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4-5).

It is easy to spend your days pointing out other people’s sins and shortcomings. Spending time asking God to search your heart to convict you of your sin keeps you humble.

As a child of God, following God’s commandments and seeking the will of God are cornerstones to intimacy with Him.

If you have a hard time confessing sins, remember that His great compassion and love always welcome you into the presence of the Lord. God’s plan for your life is perfect. Lean in!

Best Christian Prayer Room Ideas to Strengthen Faith

You can pray anywhere and everywhere. However, the day that I created a dedicated prayer space, God turbo-boosted my faith walk. 

As I began logging my prayers, I was able to look back to remember exactly what I prayed about. I could ponder how God had moved in those situations and easily see His fingerprints.

One of the best ways to take your prayer life to the next level is to create a dedicated space for serious prayer time. A stress-free zone. A prayer war room. Spiritual battles rage, so you need a prayer battle plan.

What is a Christian Prayer Room?

In today’s very busy world, a designated prayer space simply makes sense. Some days it is hard enough to focus on one thing at a time in your normal environment. 

You can easily be distracted by your “to do” lists, phones, work, chores, and many other necessities of today’s world. But Jesus calls you to look past this world and to set your gaze upon Him in Scripture.

Colossians 3:2 calls you to “set our minds on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” A prayer room is designated solely to pray and spend focused time with the Lord. Designating a prayer room or space is beneficial to a healthy Christian’s prayer life.

Where to Begin

A great place to begin is to determine why you want a prayer room in your own home. Will it be to simply appear spiritual? That shallow reason is why I created a prayer corner years ago. Needless to say, it did not get much use.

But a lot of life has happened. I have been bruised, hurt, and broken by this world. I bet you have, too. We need a serious place to spend extended time with the Lord. My prayer space is the specific place where I spend intentional time with my heavenly Father.

So the first thing you need to decide is why you want a prayer room. I can tell you first hand, God has done some serious work in my life and through my life because of time spent in dedicated prayer.

Finding a Small Room

I currently have a prayer corner in my study. I get distracted easily so choosing a small room or space is a great way to shut out distractions. 

If your children have left home, that spare room could be the perfect place for years of prayer. Do you have a walk-in closet that only stores junk? Think creatively and purposefully! 

I find that small prayer rooms or spaces are the best. That private space becomes a sacred space to deepen your personal relationship with Jesus without distraction. As you cover yourself, your whole family, and your loved ones with prayer, it will truly become the heart of your home. 

Jesus said: “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:5-6).

What Goes in a Prayer Room?

Once your specific area is selected, there are a few key items that need to be included in your prayer room.

First and foremost, you need a Bible. Since there are times when we literally pray God’s Word back to Him, a Bible is essential. There are many excellent Bibles available.

Second, keep track of your prayers. There are many different ways, including prayer cards, a prayer board, a prayer book, a bulletin board, or simply a prayer journal. Reading back over your prayers clearly shows how God is moving. Talk about a faith booster! 

Finally, Christian symbols and reminders of Christ are essential. These include crosses, your handwritten Bible verses, or even your favorite Christian art or a biblical scene. I have pictures of my Holy Land trips plastered all around. Looking at the olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane as I pray is particularly meaningful.

Personalizing Your Prayer Room

Now that your Bible and ways to record your prayers have been chosen, it’s time to focus on personalizing your quiet place of prayer. Whether your prayer space is an entire room or simply a special spot, there are beautiful ways to personalize it.

Design

Your prayer room should fit your life. If you love school supplies and organizational tools, surround yourself with Bible study materials, colored pens, journals, and fun pencil holders. 

If you are more artistic, think of painting wall art or filling the space with worship music. Your prayer space does not have to be elaborate, just to reflect you. God simply longs for us to spend time with Him in prayer. 

​Furniture

This will vary greatly depending on the size of your prayer room. Again, let it fit your personal style. You may have room for a comfortable couch or recliner with cozy throws. A writing table and chair may even fit.

For a smaller space, perhaps a large floor cushion or a comfortable chair with a lap desk fits perfectly. You could even find a padded kneeling bench. It is up to you, your budget, and the amount of available space.

Lighting

If your eyesight requires plenty of light, outfit your space accordingly. Hanging lights, table lamps, floor lamps, and ambient light all work well according to how much light you need. 

Some people say that they need bright light in order to stay awake. Colossians 4:2 tells us: “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.“

Personally, I love natural light or a soft lamp with a candle burning brightly close by. The key is creating a calm place to pray to remove the speed and anxiety of the world. 

Colors

God created an endless palette of colors to choose from, so choose what you love! Color is an excellent way to transform an empty room into your personalized space.

I love muted cottage colors, so there are a lot of blues, creams, and beige colors in my prayer space. Soft and inviting. If you love bright colors, go crazy! Simply put, make it a space where you long to spend serious time.

Spending Time in Your Prayer Room

The ultimate goal of your prayer room is for the purpose of prayer. This is where you intentionally and diligently meet with the Lord to tackle life on every level. And there are a few other necessities for this space, as well.

If you are new to prayer it can be daunting. Been there done that as a new Christian in my early 20s.

Prayer truly ushers you into God’s presence. You may begin your prayer time with anxiety and angst, but His inner peace will fill you up as His love and grace replace all else.

Scripture

Reading and meditating on Scripture on a daily basis is food for the soul. Knowing God in His Word informs every aspect of a Christian’s life. Losing track of time during quiet reflection of His Word is always time well spent.

Reading God’s Word reminds you of His promises, His love, and all He has called you to do in His name. Knowing Scripture strengthens your prayer walk as you come to know the biblical stories of salvation and spreading the Good News. God’s Word is His love letter to you.

Worship

Adoration of God is how you start your prayers. Worship music, ranging from traditional hymns to contemporary, helps you fix our eyes on Jesus. 

As you hear the melodies and sing those words to God, He reminds you of His goodness, faithfulness, and holiness. If you are not wired as a music person, spend time worshiping God by praying His psalms of praise back to Him.

Bottom Line

Spending intentional time with the Lord is the whole purpose of a prayer room or prayer space. Over time, you will be amazed as you track your prayers and see how God chooses to answer them. 

I pray that your prayer room, however large or small, is a space where Jesus becomes the central focus of your life. Your prayer requests never fall on deaf ears. God is for you!

Times of uncertainty in today’s world can threaten your safe place and sense of comfort. However, Christ’s followers understand that God’s Word and His divine protection offer hope in difficult times.

It is helpful to be reminded that the shelter of the Most High stands unwavering against the terrors of the night. Your prayer life does not need to cease in times of famine (whether spiritual, mental, or physical). God’s word is Spirit-filled.

If you are not comfortable with prayer, you don’t have to try to think of any new prayer point. You can simply pray the words already contained in the Bible right back to God.

Here are powerful prayers that you can pray for God’s presence, His hedge of protection, and great comfort in your daily life despite fierce lions and dangerous situations.

The Soldier’s Psalm

Psalm 91 is sometimes called “The Soldier’s Psalm.” It is one of the most powerful chapters in Scripture as a prayer of protection.

God’s children experience daily warfare on the spiritual battlefield—both large and small. Some days you shout for joy when God brings victory. Other days exhaustion settles in and you wonder if you have the strength to endure. 

God’s inspired words tucked in this psalm of protection provide you with confidence in Almighty God when doubt and weariness step onto the battlefield in this world today. 

On those hard days, God wraps Psalm 91 around your heart and mind like a protective shield. He reminds you that He has not abandoned you to fight alone or unprotected.

God’s Promises in Psalm 91

Three players interact in Psalm 91: a believer (verses 1-2), an audience of encouragers (verses 3-13), and God (verses 14-16). 

The first two verses provide a humbling example of how to proclaim unwavering trust in God as your shelter and refuge. This beautiful statement of faith flows from a life thankful for His divine protection! 

When the Lord is your dwelling place, no evil, plague, or darkness ever triumphs. The Name of the Lord is mighty to save! Pray these words back to Him as a strong reminder:

  • Loving Father, you promised: “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my Name.” (Psalm 91:14)
  • O Lord, on the days when I struggle, help me remember: When I call to You, You will answer me; You will be with me in trouble; You will rescue me and honor me. (Psalm 91:15)
  • ​Dear Jesus, today and every day: With long life You will satisfy me and show me Your salvation. (Psalm 91:16)
  • O Commander of the heavenly host, you promise: A thousand may fall at my side, ten thousand at my right hand, but it will not come near me. I will only look with my eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. (Psalm 91:7-8)

Prayers For A Place of Safety

Even though intense battles seem never-ending, you can trust that God is your strong tower. God’s angels stand guard over you at His command. Picturing that truth– actually envisioning His protecting shield in your mind—provides the strength you need to stand in times of great need.

The words of Psalm 91 provide the perfect Bible verses for the most powerful prayers of protection. Simply pray in the first person as you say these words directly to your dear Heavenly Father:

  • Dear Lord, you promise that: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” (Psalm 91:1-2)
  • Father, remind me each day that: “He will deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover me with His pinions, and under His wings I will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:3-4)
  • Lord, only you can faithfully: “…command His angels concerning me to guard me in all my ways.” (Psalm 91:11-12)

Power of God Prayers

The Soldier’s Psalm concludes as God reassures you that He’s got this. He’s got you. He promises to deliver you from fear and trouble today, tomorrow, and into eternity. 

If you are struggling with feeling His divine presence in our fallen world, these Psalm 91 verses provide power and a sense of comfort through the power of the Holy Spirit. Pray the words back to Him:

  • Father God, “I will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.” (Psalm 91:5-6)
  • O God, “Because I have made the Lord my dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall me, no plague come near my tent.” (Psalm 91:9-10)
  • O Lord, “I will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent I will trample underfoot.” (Psalm 91:13)

Prayers of Protection from the Word of God

Refuge awaits all who take shelter under His protective care. All who hold fast to Him in love. All who know His name. Consistent Bible study is a vital tool for knowing these truths.

Here are key verses from both the Old Testament and New Testament containing the faithful promises of God. They are a beautiful source of comfort as you pray His words back to Him:

  • Dear God, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26)
  • “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
  • Father God, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
  • O Father, I will: “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
  • Lord Jesus, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Prayers for Peace

Lasting peace only comes from God the Father. Despite war, natural disaster, destroying plague, perilous pestilence, or anything else, every child of God can rely on His peace that passes all understanding.

Grief is a natural part of life when dark days happen. God collects every tear in a bottle. But grief is not how your faith life ends. Your story begins and ends in HOPE thanks to Jesus’ life, death, and glorious resurrection.

Pray these words back to Him:

  • Thank you, Lord, for promising: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
  • “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
  • Father, help me remember: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)

Keep a Prayer Journal

Prayer is powerful, and you have the privilege to come to the Lord with what is on your heart and spilling down your cheeks. 

Logging your prayers and being watchful of how the Lord is moving equips you. It cuts through the noise of everyday life to find fullness in the presence of God.

I have kept a prayer journal for years. It provides a way to walk with purpose along my faith journey with my eyes open to the leading of the Lord.

Bible Verse for Tuesday Morning Prayer

When you focus on gratitude, there is little room left for complaining. Gratitude shifts your focus upward, past any momentary affliction. Here are some Bible verses to include in your daily prayer of gratitude for the entire day.

One of the greatest blessings that God has given us is His Word. Faithful Bible study reveals God’s strength, wisdom, and unwavering faithfulness. Any beautiful day begins in Scripture, so here we go.

  • “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13, ESV).

  • Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (Luke 18:27, NIV).

Is the Lord’s Prayer in the Old ​Testament?

The beautiful roots of the Lord’s Prayer in the Old ​Testament are clearly evident. Though the actual prayer appears only in the New Testament, its roots go way back.

That may come as a surprise, but Jesus was raised in the Jewish culture. Remembering that He shared that same Jewish heritage with the very disciples who asked how to pray helps your understanding. Let’s look closer.

In Matthew 6 and Luke 11, Jesus instructs His disciples (and disciples today) how to pray. Arguably the most well-known prayer around the world, it is also known as the Our Father Prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

From Matthew’s Gospel: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:9-13, ESV).

From Luke’s Gospel: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:2-4, ESV).

The Context

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus Christ regularly went off to a quiet place to pray His own prayers. He understood that God’s help to carry out God’s will demanded significant time with His Heavenly Father. 

Jesus was doing exactly this when the disciples approached Him and asked: “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1, ESV). Without hesitation, Jesus instructed them in this powerful prayer.

He did not propose a magic formula; rather, a model prayer to surrender your life to the will of God.

Christian traditions have added a closing phrase: “For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.” 

Jesus was sent first to the Jews (Romans 1:16; Matthew 15:24), and he was speaking to disciples who were Jewish. Those men of faith and passionate children of God had their feet firmly planted in Old Testament truth.

Old Testament Roots

When Jesus answered His disciples’ question, He framed it in a familiar Jewish context. The Jewish law (The Torah) reigned supreme and taught the elements that all Jews were to include in their prayers. 

Jesus was raised Jewish, as were Jesus’ disciples. Though the Lord’s Prayer is a short prayer, it contains many of the Jewish elements. Reading the Jewish Bible in English is helpful.

The Torah refers to prayer as “the service of the heart.” It was considered an act suffused with love and reverence much like a child approaching a loving parent. 

Originally, the mitzvah to pray did not include any specific times, nor was there a defined text. Every individual chose his or her own words with which to address the Creator. 

There was, though, a standard format for prayer: praise for God, followed by asking Him for all one’s needs, followed by expressing gratitude for all God has done for His people—both collectively and individually.

Here are the elements of the Lord’s Prayer, along with the Old Testament Bible verses that show just how grounded it is in the Old Testament.

Our Father

God’s name is central and the most important element so “Our Father” comes first. The Jews never uttered the proper name of God (even today) to avoid blasphemy. 

Consequently, they proclaimed God as “our Father”, as well:

  • “For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is Your name” (Isaiah 63:16, ESV). 
  • “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and you are out potter; we are all the work of Your hand” (Isaiah 64:8, ESV).

Who Art in Heaven

Christ Jesus also affirmed to His disciples during His earthly ministry that God reigned in the kingdom of heaven. We also see this repeatedly in the Old Testament:

  • “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you” (2 Chronicles 20:6, ESV).
  • “Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases” (Psalm 115:3, ESV).
  • “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place’” (Isaiah 57:15, ESV). 
  • “Thus says the Lord: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool'” (Isaiah 66:1, ESV).

Hallowed Be Thy Name

Holiness is not simply an attribute of God; rather it is the very nature of God. He is the One True God who laid the foundation of the world. Jesus included this truth as part of the prayer:

  • “​And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you” (Leviticus 22:32, ESV). 
  • “And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you” (2 Samuel 7:26, ESV).
  • “And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!’” (Isaiah 6:3, ESV).

Thy Kingdom Come

As the Bread of Life, Jesus’ prayer bridged the Word of God beautifully between the Old and New Testaments. Consequently, he taught these founders of the early church about the coming kingdom of God:

  • “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44, ESV). 
  • “Behold, your King is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is He, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9, ESV).

Thy Will Be Done

God’s will and God’s plan will never change nor fail. By including those truths in the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus conveyed that the new covenant believers were to trust God’s perfect will for everyday life, just as believers of old:

  • “He does according to His will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth” (Daniel 4:35, ESV). 
  • “Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God! Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground!” (Psalm 143:10, ESV).

On Earth As It Is In Heaven

Jesus knew that it would be helpful for His disciples to understand that a believer’s walk is not always going to be easy. Nor was it during Old Testament times. 

God’s will on earth unmistakably reigns supreme, just as it does in heaven. This means that God will protect us from all evil – even to the point of sacrificing His only Son.

Martin Luther put it this way: “If we would be Christians, therefore, we must surely expect and count on having the devil with all his angels and the world as our enemies.”

  • “You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them” (Nehemiah 9:6, ESV). 
  • “He does according to His will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth” (Daniel 4:35, ESV).

Our Daily Bread

​Because of Jesus, the Bread of Life, we have the good news of His presence and God’s love. 

  • “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent’” (Exodus 16:16, ESV).
  • “He will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; his water will be sure” (Isaiah 33:16, ESV).

Forgive Us Our Debts

We cannot wipe our own sin away. We cannot cleanse our souls from it, either. Only God can do that. 

Just as the prophets of old fell on their faces before God asking for forgiveness of sins, we do likewise today. Not just to assuage a guilty conscience, but so that God can remove that sin and wash us white as snow.

Keeping open, honest communication with God in prayer and confession, God’s forgiveness washes over us without hesitation. Jesus knew the disciples would desperately need to know that even when they sinned, they could still carry out Jesus’ ministry.

  • “Keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exodus 34:7, ESV).
  • “And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive” (1 Kings 8:30, ESV). 
  • “Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy” (Psalm 103:3-4, ESV).

As We Forgive Our Debtors

​Forgiving those who have hurt us can be one of the hardest things we ever face. In fact, I wrote a whole book about forgiveness as a Bible study. 

However, forgiving others with a sincere heart frees us from the cage of anger and bitterness. Unforgiveness hurts ourselves, not the offender.

Just as God told His people in the Old Testament, Jesus reminds His disciples today that we need to extend forgiveness as relentlessly as He does.

  • “Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord” (1 Samuel 25:28, ESV). 
  • “Then they said, ‘We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say‘” (Nehemiah 5:12, ESV).

Lead Us Not Into Temptation

Jesus knew from firsthand experience that our spiritual enemy tirelessly tempts us.

With perfect wisdom, He knew that His disciples (both then and now) would need the strength of God Almighty to withstand it, just as believers had for centuries.

  • “For those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up” (Isaiah 9:16, ESV). 
  • “A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good” (Proverbs 16:29, ESV). 

But Deliver Us From Evil

Anyone who does not believe that evil exists has not read Scripture.

Again, Jesus bridges the Old and New Testaments by warning that it not only exists but that only God can deliver believers from it.

  • “The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life” (Psalm 121:7, ESV). 
  • “I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless” (Jeremiah 15:21, ESV).

Kingdom, Power, and Glory

Although the Gospel of Matthew does not record the end of the Lord’s Prayer as we say it today, the words are still rooted in Old Testament truth. The power and glory of God were brilliantly displayed as He rescued the Israelites from Egypt. 

His Kingdom, power, and glory shone brightest as He resurrected our Savior Jesus from the grave.

  • “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is Yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord” (1 Chronicles 29:11, ESV).
  • “And to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him” (Daniel 7:14, ESV).

Forever and Ever

Our Triune God existed before the timeline of eternity was even established.

Just as the Israelites learned in the Old Testament, Jesus wanted New Testament believers to know that He is the same yesterday, today, and for all eternity.

  • “But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever” (Daniel 7:18, ESV).

Even though this common prayer that we share known as the Lord’s Prayer was memorialized by Jesus in the New Testament, all of the elements are rooted in God’s teaching since the days of Moses and the Patriarchs.

Calming Prayers for Mom Before Having Surgery

My mom has faced some health issues in recent years even though she is in relatively good health. However, today she had surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from her face. I said a lot of prayers for Mom before surgery.

Even though the medical staff reassured Mom that she has the “best” kind of cancer, it is still cancer. A word that can bring fear to the bravest heart.

Mom loved laying out in the sun slathered in suntan oil when she was younger. And her dermatologist said it was only a matter of time before such spots appeared. So how did we prepare for surgery?

We Celebrated First

My family gathered for Mom’s 81st birthday just a few weeks ago. We celebrated her life with fun decorations, enjoyed lots of cake, and prayed for a successful surgery. 

Mom bravely went under the hands of the surgeons in the operating room today. She is now in the recovery process.

The time during her healing process will tell us if the cancer removal was successful. She will need to come to grips with a scar on her face – a hard thing for anyone.

I spent a lot of time in prayer for Mom over the past several weeks. In fact, if you have never kept a prayer journal, that certainly helps see how God moves.

Always Pray in Jesus’ Name

As a Christian, you understand that the power of prayer must precede everything. And that healing prayer is vitally important for the life of a loved one – especially a mom.

Jesus is your power source: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18, ESV). So with confidence and peace of mind, you pray in His name.

Prayer enables you to ask Almighty God in Jesus’ holy name to take control of the situation. So start by asking the Great Physician to positively influence the hands of the medical people for a successful operation and speedy recovery.

God is your heavenly father who cares for you all the time, but most especially in your time of need. At the same time, He has given you free will to determine what you want.

God is a gentleman and does not intrude into your affairs if we do not want him to. In fact, Scripture says, “You have not because you ask not” (James 4:2-3, ESV). So trust His loving arms every step of the way.

Powerful Prayers Before Surgery

So what are the best ways to pray for someone as beloved and important as a mom? And on such a sobering occasion as a surgical procedure?

Inviting the Lord Jesus Christ and Divine Healer is the most crucial step. Here are prayers that I have found helpful during this journey with my Mom to use as a starting point for your own prayers.

Helpful Prayers

Gracious Father, we commit into Your hands the surgeon’s hand and medical professionals. Send Your guardian angels to guide them and preserve Mom with Your healing touch. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 

Dear God, I ask that You come into this operation room and take control of the medical team for Mom’s surgery today. Restore Mom to full health through complete healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

O Lord, please give Mom (and her family) a peace that passes human understanding. You are the God of hope, so with grateful hearts, we ask You to guide the surgical team through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father God, surgery can be a difficult time with all of the worry that we let creep in. You are Lord of lords full of loving kindness, so ease our worry. Let the peace of God rule over any anxiety to bring perfect harmony today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer Scripture for Someone Going Into Surgery

Heavenly Father, your promises are as true today as they were in Bible times. You promised, “I am the Lord that heals you” (Exodus 15:26, ESV). I trust that promise while Mom is on the operating table today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus, when you touched Peter’s mother-in-law, her fever immediately disappeared (Luke 4:38-40, ESV). Extend your healing hand over Mom today and completely restore her health. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Lord, You promise in Scripture that when we commit our work and plans into Your hands, You will establish them (Proverbs 16:3, ESV). I commit the work of the doctors and nurses into Your hands for successful surgery and Mom’s healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear God, give my mom Your peace that surpasses all human understanding. Remove every fear, trouble, and anxiety from her, and fill her with confidence that she is safe in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Good Prayer for Someone Having Surgery

Lord God, bring to the surgeon’s hands all of the skills needed for a successful outcome. Prepare them with sharp minds and grant Mom a full recovery surrounded by loving family and your good things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father, give Mom peace from an anxious heart. Provide her physical body with the best care in that surgery room to give her long life and normal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Jesus, only you can bring the healing power of God. Give the doctors and nurses the skill and ability to make the right decisions to bring Mom safety through surgery. enrich her daily life by granting her complete healing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Father, my prayer today is for Mom. As she faces surgery tomorrow, I trust you to guide the hands of the doctor. Calm all anxious thoughts and bring healing in the mighty name of Jesus.

Short Prayer for Successful Surgery and Recovery

Dearest God, we put all our trust in you. Bless the doctor’s hands and the outcome of surgery. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

O God, I pray that the surgery room is filled with the heavenly host. Let them surround Mom, the doctors, and the medical staff to bring healing through a successful surgery. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Loving Heavenly Father, let the doctors and nurses be extensions of your healing hand. We trust you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dearest Jesus, I entrust Mom’s body, soul, and spirit in your perfect hands during surgery. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father, I know that you cherish her more than I do, and pray that you will bring her through better than ever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord God, full health is what I desire for Mom so I boldly pray that be her portion in Jesus’ name. 

Prayer for Safe Operation

Father, as Mom’s surgery draws near, an anxious heart can make peace elusive. Calm her from the inside out as only you can do. Give her comfort in knowing that you are working for her good and your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Lord, give us comforting words of hope and healing to share with Mom as she goes in for her operation. Let those holy words wash over her to bring peace and hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus, you can heal all sickness and disease, even those we may classify as incurable. I believe in miracles and pray that you strengthen and heal Mom through today’s operation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord and Friend, I ask that you renew Mom’s health today through a successful operation in such a remarkable way that no one can take glory for it but You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father, you have brought Mom to this point so that you can bring healing to her body. Guide the hands of the surgeon and medical staff to ensure a successful operation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer for After Surgery

Father God, thank you for bringing Mom through a successful surgery today. I praise you for working through the doctors to accomplish everything needed to heal Mom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Jesus, I pray that you complete the healing work that you started today in Mom’s surgery. Keep her stable and strengthen her hour by hour as you continue to make her well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear God, as Mom now moves from surgery to health, bless her with a strong body, mind, and spirit. Let her see Your hand in her healing and rely on You for all the days of her life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Father, I am so thankful that you have brought Mom safely through surgery! I pray that you continue to heal her body so that she can serve you fully with joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray Without Ceasing

He wants you to live a life of constant prayer. In fact, Scripture specifically says, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, ESV). Those moments when you are waiting in the doctor’s office provide great opportunities to talk with God.

Engage in ongoing communication with Him as your closest friend. Such honest and open hearts enable you to build a strong relationship with Him. Over time, you learn to rely on Him for all your needs.

Silent prayers are just as effective as spoken prayers. God’s power resides in both, so if you are uncomfortable praying out loud or find yourself in a situation where you need to be silent, prayer is still possible.

The Bible is as true today as the days in which it was written. God is the healer of your soul and body, offering His resurrection life to bring healing, both physically and eternally.

God wants you to pray when things are going well and when they are going the other way. He wants you to pray about everything and never rely upon your own efforts or abilities.

Why Is Prayer Important?

​Almighty God is the giver of life. As the Great Physician, only He can bring healing into anyone’s life. 

Prayer intentionally brings the power of God into any situation. Although Jesus is always present, He will not barge into your life. He gently knocks and waits for you to open the door. 

Intentional prayer also brings an acute awareness of His presence in your life. As you pray for certain people or situations, you will be able to discern how God is moving. That is a strong way to strengthen your faith!

God promises: “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you” (Jeremiah 29:12, ESV). God is as close as your next breath and hears every word – both spoken and unspoken.

Some medical cases are not physical even though they may appear to be so. Some ailments can only be answered by prayers. Jesus said, “This kind will not go except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21, footnote).

Do Not Be Ignorant of Satan’s Devices

Scripture clearly warns us: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, ESV). 

That passage continues by letting you know what to do: “Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world” (1 Peter 5:9, ESV).

I wrote an entire 8-week Bible study on the armor of God called “Your Strong Suit” based on Ephesians 6:10-18. Understanding the defensive armor that God has provided emboldens us to fight the good fight with prayer leading the charge.

The Armor of God

God has also given you the most powerful offensive weapon: “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17, ESV).

In order to use that all-powerful, spiritual offensive weapon, you need to know God’s Word. Studying the Bible is key. Here are several Bible studies to get you started.

Regularly reading through Scripture is also a powerful tool in your spiritual arsenal against attacks of the enemy. Set yourself the task of reading through the Bible by picking one of these free Bible reading plans.

God is For You

Knowing God’s Word is key to an effective prayer life. As you read through Scripture, pick out some key Bible verses to memorize. 

Committing your life and the life of your loved ones into God’s hands is the most effective way to live a God-honoring life full of contentment and peace, despite any hard time that comes.

He is for you and not against you! He will bring about His perfect plan in your life that will be far better than you could have planned.

The goodness of the Lord and His higher power in your life are the greatest blessings that you will ever receive. He faithfully holds you in the palm of His mighty hand.

7 Essential Elements of Prayer (Plus Free Download)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Prayer is a vital, vibrant part of our Christian walk. Consequently, we need to answer the most obvious question first.

What is Prayer?

At its core, prayer is talking to God. Prayer is not meditation or still reflection. Prayer is direct communication with God.

Simply picture a girl or boy having a conversation with their father. They will ask their dad for all kinds of things they need. Later in life, they may also ask for direction or guidance. We can apply this scenario between the children of God and our heavenly Father.

Prayer is a two-way street. We pour out our burdens, struggles, and needs, then we also listen for His answers. Even though we do not hear God’s voice audibly as Moses did from the burning bush, He speaks to us through:

  • His Word
  • Other believers
  • His Creation

Being a bona fide music person, one might add music to that list, as well.

The Purpose of Prayer

Through daily prayer, we worship God, give Him thanks, and lay our requests at His feet. It is much more than a pre-recorded speech that we replay to God each time we hit our knees.

I confess that too often I have spent my prayer time reading off a list of what I wanted God to do for me and how I thought He should meet my needs.

Consequently, several years ago I assigned myself the task to learn the difference between merely saying a prayer and actually praying. I longed for meaningful fellowship with God and to discern God’s will for my life.

You can approach God with any type of prayer: in time of need, a prayer of petition, a prayer of intercession, infinite wisdom, and asking for God’s strength, among many others. You do not have to use the right words or fancy words – simply use your own words.

I am sharing these seven elements (among others) with you because I believe they will add meaning and a personal relationship with God to your prayer time.

Prayer Will Change Your Life

Praying is hard at first – at least it was for me. Having a conversation with someone I could not see was challenging. However, understanding that He is with us and in us through the power of the Holy Spirit in everyday life helps remove that self-imposed stumbling block.

Over time, as prayer becomes part of our daily routine, God will strengthen our faith. We will notice how He has answered prayer and moved in certain situations. Often, He will bless us in ways we never even knew to ask.

I love to see how God has moved in my life and in the lives of those I pray for, so I keep a prayer journal. It is a powerful tool for increasing our faith!

Prayer can be uttered both as a short prayer and long-term. Those quick, “Lord, give me the words to say” prayers are just as important to our faith walk as those long-term, “Lord, what is Your purpose in my life?” prayers.

How Do I Pray?

Prayer is truly a sacred act. It’s a conversation with the Creator of the Universe who knitted you together in your mother’s womb. It is both sobering and an incredible privilege in equal measure.

A daily, dedicated prayer time includes a few tried and true necessities:

  • Empty your mind so that you are fully focused on God. (Mentally setting aside our to-do lists takes some practice.)
  • Pick a place that is soothing and free from distraction.
  • Turn off the television and radio and leave your smartphone out of reach.

And just be real. He already knows everything in our hearts and minds. He simply desires that conversation with us.

The Power of Prayer

Keep in mind that we do not pray alone. With seven billion people on earth, there are likely millions of people praying at the same time on various topics.

As Christians, we pray in the name of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit that lives inside of every believer.

Neither prayer nor church was part of my childhood. As an adult, the thought of approaching God in prayer was terrifying. I pictured Him sitting on a cloud, ready to strike me down with a lightning bolt.

Not so! He loves us more than we can possibly imagine. Through prayer, we worship God, give Him thanks, and lay our requests at His feet.

What Do I Say in Prayer?

Jesus’ disciples struggled with that very same question. Consequently, they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray (Luke 11:1). Thanks to their brave question, we have a prayer format that became known as The Lord’s Prayer:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

(Matthew 6:9-13)

From this model prayer, we can apply the acronym “F.A.C.T.S.” to our own prayers in order to include all of the key elements of prayer that Jesus outlined. Let’s take a closer look at these elements.

Element #1: – Faith

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6).

Simply put, we need faith to pray. Faith given to us by God is the foundation of a believer’s life. Faith is known as the currency of heaven.

Only through faith in Jesus Christ, his life, death, and resurrection, can we approach God through prayer. He knows us by name and embraces us as His beloved children.

“And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith” (Matthew 21:22).

Element #2: – Adoration

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name” (Matthew 6:9).

Worship and praise of God are certainly essential. Adoration focuses on the character of God and delineates the holy attributes that make Him worthy of all worship.

As we begin our prayer times, we focus on the ONE who hears our prayers rather than jumping straight to our list of needs.

“Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created” (Revelation 4:11).

Element #3: – Confession

“And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).

As we approach God in prayer, we do so with humility through confession. Over the years, I have realized that this confession element includes two specific kinds: (1) confess my sins, and (2) confess my dependence on God.

Confess my sins:

Jesus’ blood shed on the cross provided forgiveness for our sins. Scripture tells us that we are to continually confess our sins understanding that He has already extended forgiveness.  

Why is that important? If God only forgave sins we remembered to confess, we would be in a hot mess. He forgives the sins we confess and those we did not even realize we committed. He faithfully washes us white as snow.

If we forget some of our sins, take heart! The Apostle Paul assures us: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26).

Confess my dependence on Him:

Prayer is our white flag of surrender that acknowledges we cannot succeed on our own. We desperately need God to direct and nurture our lives.

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me” (Psalm 51:1-3).

Element #4: – Thanksgiving

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Living a life of thanksgiving and gratitude begins in prayer. All blessings come from God, whether we acknowledge them or not.

Thanksgiving carves out time to say a proper “thank you” to God. If you have children and you taught them to say “please” and “thank you,” that is the basic understanding of this element.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Element #5: – Supplication

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Like the “confession” prayer element, supplication includes two specific kinds: (1) our own needs, and (2) the needs of others (intercession).

Supplication:

This is the part of the prayer we lay before the Lord our own needs and struggles. This is not merely a “to-do” list for God; rather, an avenue to discern His will for our lives and to draw us closer to Him. He knows our desires and hurts, and He delights in hearing them from us.

Jesus demonstrated supplication in the Garden of Gethsemane shortly before He was crucified: ” My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).

Intercession:

This is where we lay the needs of others before the Lord. This is a beautiful act of unselfish love for other people and the body of Christ.

God alone knows what each person needs and knows the best way to provide for them. Asking God to move and work on behalf of others is faith-filled love.

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ” (Colossians 4:2-3).

Beyond the F.A.C.T.S acronym, I have learned that there are two other important elements of a vibrant prayer life.

Element #6: – Submission

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

Once you have finished praying, acknowledge God’s sovereignty in His answers. Declaring your surrender that His way is the best – even if He denies a heartfelt request – is a sure sign that you are trusting God and walking in obedience.

Element #7: – Listening

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Remaining spiritually alert to how God answers your prayers is another essential element of a vibrant prayer life. He may not bring about the result you want in exactly the way you asked Him to.

However, it is a beautiful privilege to watch how He moves and orchestrates solutions. Such diligent observation increases our faith that He has everything under control.

Simple Prayers

If you are new to prayer, this may seem like a daunting list. Been there. Done that. God still knows your heart.

Remember that there is no distance in prayer. There is no language barrier that prayer cannot overcome.

Like striking a match to generate light and heat, things start to change when you pray. The key is to keep praying and keep those lines of communication open with God.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

Dear Pastor: Will You Forgive Us?

Pastors have answered a high and difficult calling. There are few things that boil my blood faster or put my feet on a soap box quicker than when I hear God’s people hurling mean-spirited or spiteful comments at God-loving, servant-hearted pastors.

It gets ugly when sheep turn on their shepherds. And Satan, along with the world, watches. Smiling.

I love to intentionally encourage my pastors. When I see them at some mid-week church function, I am fully aware that they may have faced strenuous spiritual warfare. The enemy has likely lobbed a stream of fiery darts at them, whether it’s tough counseling sessions, disheartening church politics, or the death of a member.

It’s critical to convey to our pastors and pastor friends just how vital they are to God’s work and His church — to let these grace-filled men of faith know how much they, their families, and their ministries mean to so many.

So…to my pastors, all my pastor friends, and your beautiful families:

You embrace the calling to be crucified with Christ, yet sometimes we are the ones pounding in the nails.

Please forgive us.

You take up the cross of Christ without hesitation because it is not merely your day job–it’s your very calling, passion and purpose. Yet sometimes we watch from comfortable pews without lifting a finger as you stumble under that staggering weight alone.

Please forgive us.

You love us enough to sacrifice family time, shorten vacations and make yourself available 24-7-365. Yet when you need to unplug and allow God to recharge you, we haughtily demand your instantaneous appearance.

Please forgive us.

When life blindsides us with loss, relationship difficulties, health scares or financial burdens, you are the first to offer prayer and call in the posse to help. Yet when you need us, we wear busyness as a badge to dodge.

Please forgive us.

You willingly live in a glass house with our noses pressed against it, gracefully shouldering our smart aleck remarks and quick judgments. Yet when you lovingly ask us accountability questions, our self-righteous indignation could choke God Almighty.

Please forgive us.

But I want you to hear loud and clear: You are not expendable.

You are VITAL.
You are VALUABLE.
You are LOVED.

As you stand at the vanguard of deadly spiritual warfare, it’s an amazing privilege to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you on God’s battlefield. To heartily encourage you when you are weary. To follow where God calls you to lead.
